By tradition the Catholic working class movement celebrates Nikolaus Groß birthday once in a year in the Dome of Xanten. The sermon is given by the then suffragan bishop of Paderborn and the present Bishop of Trier, Prof. Dr. Reinhard Marx.
At the same time the cathedral of Essen is the venue of a mass, in which the Bishop of Essen pays tribute to Nikolaus Groß as a family father and as a witness of his faith. The day reaches its climax and conclusion with the persformance of the musical "Nikolaus Groß" by members of the parish St. Barbara in the Gruga Essen, attended by more than 5000, mainly young people.
