Nikolaus Groß was a witness of light in the dark night. The symbolism of light is expressed in many signs of commemoration and worship for Blessed Nikolaus Groß. On the occasion of his 100th birthday in the year 1998 the Catholic working class movement in the Ruhr area commemorated his life with a light procession through the Ruhr area. With their miners` lamps the Catholic workers follow the steps of the young miner and trade union secretary Nikolaus Groß - from Niederwenigern via Essen-Altendorf, Bochum-Dahlhausen, Bottrop and Oberhausen. Nikolaus Groß was a son of the Ruhr area and the people in this region can identify with his personal biography. His testimony for the Christian faith is part of the spiritual heritage of the Ruhr area and of the Diocese of Essen.

This map shows you the way of this procession from 30th September to 4th October 1998:

Nikolaus Groß and his family were very mobile - always ready to take the risk of a new start in life. "Trust in God and uncertain" this name of the coal pit, in which Nikolaus Groß worked as a miner, appears to be like a symbolic name characterising their attitude to life. It is also typical of their readiness to face difficulties and new challenges. Follow on this map the way of Nikolaus Groß and his family through the German Reich from 1912 to 1945.
